Inspiration from spa treatments around the world allows users to experience different cultures through ancient healing techniques. Scandinavian cold baths, Korean saunas and south-east Asian therapies provide real mental and physical benefits backed by research.
grounded in nature
The site is located in Boringdon Hall in Plymouth, surrounded by nature and nearby quarries. Natural slate, dark stone and raw wood creates a dark, minimalist and brutalist aesthetic grounded in earth's natural materials. The idea is to go back to basics and loose yourself in natural forest views.
holistic healing
Focusing on healing the mind rather than just the body; Sombre is a place where one can truly switch off, disconnect and calm their mind by engaging with their senses and feeling their body.
sustainability
Economic, social and environmental sustainability was put at the heart of this design; sourcing local materials while supporting accessibility and inclusivity was a non-negotiable.

Feel like you are swimming in a real infinity pool outside with the borderless trim.
softened by plants
To soften the harsh stone and hardwood, tropical plants and ferns grow within the spa and thrive from the humid environment. Greenery also provides a comforting smell to interact with the senses, similar to freshly fallen rain on a warm day, or moments before a thunderstorm. Depleting the vision of stimuli helps the body to touch into its other senses that are often underwhelmed or overlooked.
